Learning Pool as a Head of Marketing
I joined Learning Pool as one of the company's first senior recruits in early 2007 when the company was in its very early days as a new tech start up.

My task was to set up the marketing operation which involved creating and executing the marketing strategy. I also developed the company's brands, online community and customer base.

As Marketing team leader I helped customers get the most from the online community by nurturing relationships. My team created all the marketing collateral, campaigns and sales and support for the company, as well as key events and annual conferences.

During my time at Learning Pool we won many awards including the Deloitte Fast 50 and Intertrade Ireland's Seedcorn competition.

An Curragh as a Marketing and Circulation Manager
An Curragh was a workers co-operative that was established to sell traditionally produced Irish craft products to overseas markets. The sales channels involved were seasonal catalogues as well as online.

I joined the organisation to help set up the marketing operation and was involved in identifying and renting lists from overseas brokers to send the catalogues to. I set up the online presence with the IT team.

I also worked on the branding and catalogue design with the graphic designers, liaised with the producers of the products and with the warehouse team on the packaging and despatch of the orders to customers.

Unfortunately the craft co-operative folded due to poor sales from US when the recession of 2007 hit.

Manager of six sales channels reaching a customer base of 5m in the UK and 1m internationally, with a budget of 1.5m and achieving sales of 60m.

Key achievements include:

Designed and implemented strategies to reach new and existing customers. Achieved growth of over 40% in 5 years by creating a portfolio of sales channels that uses a mix of direct relationships with the customer (direct mail and web), intermediaries (Post Office Ltd and retail) and business-to-business channels (Trade and Overseas Representatives).

Created the stamps and collecting community on www.royalmail.com/stamps including designing the online shop functionality & associated fulfilment operation, the Smilers application and the online content, email campaigns and online media campaigns.

Returned the sales channels portfolio to full profitability by identifying a cost reduction and income generation programme. The resulting profitability changed from an average of 12% profitability to +52% profitability over 3 years.

Janet has an enormous amount of marketing experience which covers digital marketing, brand management, and traditional marketing, but what sets her apart is her ability to recognize and respect how that sits within a business strategy. She has an uncanny ability to see the best in a business and demonstrate how those strengths can be best communicated to the wider world.

I had the pleasure of working in Janet's team for over a year in Learning Pool. Janet's marketing acumen is inspiring and is complemented by her wealth of experience in numerous industries. Her ability to visualise the result as early as the concept stage is really quite remarkable and is one of the things that makes her such a good motivator. Her dedication to completing tasks on schedule often meant that she has worked long hours at home, after her work day had ended, which she did without hesitation or complaint. I am so pleased to have met such a lovely mentor and friend and would highly recommend Janet's expertise to any organisation, big or small.

Janet's someone who doesn't just get to know her customer segment - she gets to know her customers. She gets across the whole picture - from the top right down to the individuals she worked with every day. Some marketers need to shout and stamp their feet to get a message heard. Janet figures out what message individual customers need, and delivers it to them at the right time, in the right way!
